David Binnard, 1877-1949
David5 Binnard (Izrael4, Mosiek3, Jacob2, Lewin1) was born 9 December 1877 at Rochester, Monroe County, New York.[1] He was a twin of Solomon. As a child he moved with his family to Turner, Oregon,[2] then to Palouse, Washington,[3] where he grew up.
As a young man David went to Butte, Montana, where he resided with his older brother, Joseph, a lawyer.[4] He was employed as a clerk in Binnard & Binnard, the clothing store co-owned by his brother, Aaron, and his aunt, Rachel Binnard.[5] After a few years there he became a salesman in the store of John H. Wein.[6] His twin brother Solomon also worked in the store.[7] In Butte David met Margaret Marie Kelley, daughter of Charles and Margaret (Lacey) Kelley, Irish immigrants. She was born in Virginia City, Nevada.[8] Her family came to Montana soon after her birth. In 1900 they were living in Walkerville, where her father was a miner.[9] David and Margaret were married in Butte by a justice of the peace on 16 August 1904, with David’s cousin Birka Binnard and his wife Gussie signing as witnesses.[10] They resided in Butte until about 1908, when they moved to Spokane, where David opened his own store.[11] The business was called the Binnard Clothing Company, specializing in men’s furnishings. It was located at 423 Front Avenue.[12] By 1912 he had given up the business and had become a traveling salesman.[13] In 1918 he registered for the draft. On the form he was described as a traveling salesman for Julius Fried. He was 40 years old, of medium height and medium build, with blue eyes and grey hair.[14] David and Margaret had two daughters, Geraldine, born about 1909, and Maxine, born in 1917.[15] About 1935 or 1936 the couple separated or divorced.[16] After that David resided in various places in the West: in Butte[17] and Great Falls, Montana in 1937;[18] in San Diego in 1938;[19] in Butte again in 1940;[20] and in Los Angeles in 1943.[21] On 24 July 1942, David married Mabel (Miller) Fields at Seattle, Washington.[22] Mabel, a widow, was born in 30 March 1880[23] in Wisconsin.[24] She married George Fields at Palouse, Washington in 1901.[25] The couple was probably known to David from when he lived in Palouse. George was a druggist and he and Mabel resided in Seattle from 1906 until his death in 1940.[26] Mabel died there on 12 June 1946[27] and is buried next to George in Palouse.[28] David died in Los Angeles on 14 April 1949.[29] His cremains were interred in Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston, Idaho.[30] His first wife, Margaret, died 23 Jun 1959 in Walla Walla, Washington and is interred there.[31] Children: 1. Geraldine Patricia Binnard, born about 1909, Washington;[32] married Reginald Carr;[33] married James S. Nelson[34] 2. Maxine Margaret Binnard, born 13 July 1917, Spokane; married Walter Grieser; died 3 March 2012, Renton, King County, Washington[35] _________________________ [1] United States World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942, index and images, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 7 February 2014), David Binnard; NARA record group 147, archive number 563992, box number 17.
