Solomon Binnard, 1877-1959
Solomon5 Binnard (Izrael4, Mosiek3, Jacob2, Lewin1) was born 9 December 1877[1] in Rochester, New York.[2] He was a twin of David. As a child he moved with his family to Turner, Oregon,[3] then to Palouse, Washington,[4] where he grew up. He completed four years of high school.[5] In 1918, when he registered for the draft at the age of 40, he was described as tall with a stout build, blue eyes, and grey hair.[6]
By 1898 Solomon had relocated to Butte Montana,[7] where he met Dinah Cox. Dinah Jane Cock was born at St. Agnes, Cornwall, England[8] and baptized there on 22 May 1878.[9] Her parents were George Cock and Harriet J. Waters.[10] By 1880 her father, a miner, had immigrated to the United States with his brother Samuel. They settled in Butte, Montana and changed their last name to Cox.[11] Dinah, her mother, and younger brother George arrived eight years later, in 1887.[12] Solomon and Dinah were married in Butte on 17 September 1898 by Emerson B. Lounsbury,[13] a Methodist minister.[14] The witnesses were Solomon’s brother, Joseph, and his sister-in-law Margaret, wife of his brother Abraham. In the marriage record, Solomon is called “King Solomon Binnard.” Dinah changed her first name to Donna sometime before 1910.[15] At first Solomon worked as a tailor[16] and then as a clerk for Wein’s Clothing Store on Park Street in Butte.[17] His twin brother, David, was also an employee.[18] By 1907 he and his wife moved to Spokane, Washington, where he and Michael Ball established B & B Clothing Company at 510 Maine Avenue. Solomon was president of the company and Michael was the secretary-treasurer.[19] Michael was born in Germany in 1852 and immigrated to the United States in 1872.[20] Besides his partnership with Solomon, he was also president of Ball Clothing Company, secretary of Washington Loan Office, and secretary of Max Erman Company, jeweler.[21] After three years the partnership with Ball was dissolved and Solomon became a traveling salesman.[22] At least one of his employers was Julius Fried, a wholesale and retail dealer in cigars in Butte.[23] [24] Fried also employed Solomon’s twin brother, David.[25] Solomon continued as a cigar salesman in 1920, when he lived in Los Angeles,[26] but around 1921 he moved to El Paso, Texas, where he, Elias Sternglanz, and W.O. Hamilton received a charter from the Secretary of State to incorporate the Knox Hotel Company of El Paso, with $30,000 in capital.[27] In 1926 Solomon was back in Los Angeles, again working as a traveling salesman,[28] but by 1935 he and Donna were living in Omak, Washington, where they were co-owners of a women’s clothing store.[29] They still resided in Omak in 1942,[30] when Solomon registered for the draft, but by 1948 they had returned to Los Angeles.[31] Solomon died on 30 September 1959[32] and Donna on 22 June 1965.[33] They are entombed in the West Mausoleum in Grand View Memorial Park, Glendale, California.[34] Child: 1. Harold Allen Binnard, born 10 June 1907 Spokane, Spokane County, Washington;[35] married Shirle Baily;[36] died 24 February 1971, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.[37] He later changed the spelling of his first name to Harrold. _________________________ [1] "United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/29J8-F2B : accessed 08 Feb 2014), Sol Binnard, 1917-1918; citing Spokane City no 3, Spokane City no 4, Washington, United States, NARA microfilm publication M1509, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d); Family History Library microfilm 001992106.
