Amelia "Minnie" (Binnard) (Davis) Boggess, 1882-1936
Amelia5 Binnard (Abram4, Mosiek3, Jakob2, Lewin1) was born 15 June 1882[1] at Lewiston, Idaho,[2] the youngest child of Abraham and Rachel (Grostein) Binnard. She was called Minnie. She was 16 when her father died in 1898[3] and 20 when she lost her mother in 1902.[4]
In 1906 Minnie accompanied her brother-in-law, Samuel Goldstone, her sister, Anna Binnard, and her four-year-old nephew, Abram Goldstone, to San Francisco. They were staying at the Hotel Savoy when the earthquake struck early in the morning of April 18. Escaping with only a few belongings, they spent two days and nights in Golden Gate Park before they were able to leave the city.[5] Minnie and her sister Anna continued to live with Samuel Goldstone whose wife, their sister Phoebe, had died in 1905.[6] The 1910 census shows them living in the Goldstone home in Cottonwood, Idaho, where Samuel had a general store. The census notes that the two sisters had their own income.[7] Anna Binnard and Samuel Goldstone were married 28 December 1911.[8] On 31 May 1912 the Lewiston Morning Tribune reported that Anna and her [step]son Abram Goldstone would be traveling to Portland to attend the wedding of Minnie Binnard and Albert Davis. The paper noted that Minnie had been living in Portland with relatives for the past five years. Albert was described as "a prominent traveling salesman of Portland and a man of sterling worth."[9] He was born 15 January 1876 in New York City, the son of Henry and Amelia Davis.[10] The couple were married 1 June 1912, by Jonah Wise,[11] who was rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel in Portland.[12] By 1918, Albert and Minnie were residing in Los Angeles. Like all men in his age group, Albert registered for the draft in World War I. According to his description he was five feet eight inches tall, weighed 124 pounds, and had blue eyes and dark brown hair. He had his own butcher shop at 332 South Hill Street while the couple lived nearby at 314 South Olive Street.[13] In 1920 the census lists Albert as a merchant dealing in stationery,[14] while the city directory lists his occupation as "curios." His place of business was still at 332 South Hill Street, the former butcher shop.[15] Minnie is alone in 1924, listed as Mrs. Amelia Davis in the directory; her address was 337 South Olive, a few doors down from where she had lived with Albert.[16] In 1930 Minnie was back living with her sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Samuel Goldstone, in Lewiston. The census lists her as married, but Albert Davis was not in the household.[17] They were divorced shortly thereafter.[18] Later that year Minnie again escaped disaster. She was staying at the Key Route Inn in Oakland, California when fire broke out.[19] One person was killed and $75,000 worth of damage was done to the upper story and the roof.[20] Shortly thereafter, Minnie moved to Long Beach, California where her sister, Hinda Wax, resided.[21] There she met Frank W. Boggess. Frank was born 3 August 1871 in Wisconsin,[22] the son of Jeptha and Francis (Warren) Boggess.[23] He was first married to Nettie A. Corning at Blackhawk, Iowa on 10 June 1896.[24] They had a son, Harry, who was born in Minneapolis in 1900.[25] In 1910 Frank and his family resided in Sonora, California, where he worked as a mechanic for a lumber company.[26] The 1920 census shows him, now divorced, working in a fish cannery in Long Beach.[27] Still in Long Beach in 1930, his occupation was cigar salesman.[28] Minnie and Frank were married in Santa Ana, California on 20 December 1932. Frank's occupation was given as cigar salesman and Minnie's as saleslady.[29] They were living at 555 Pacific Avenue in Long Beach[30] when a strong earthquake struck on 10 March 1933. There was much property damage and 120 people were killed, but Minnie and Frank were not among them. Minnie died 19 Jun 1936[31] in Long Beach.[32] She was buried in Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston, Idaho.[33] Frank passed away 16 January 1945 in Los Angeles.[34] His final resting place is not known. Minnie had no children. _________________________ [1] Find A Grave, Inc., Find A Grave, database entry (http://www.findagrave.com : accessed 29 January 2014), entry for Amelia Binnard Boggess, Memorial 27939186, Records of Normal Hill Cemetery, Lewiston, Idaho; created by Floral~Lady.
